Job Description
The role of a NE Surf Team Coach incorporates several different areas of responsibility that reflect our core values and behaviors (see below). In addition to the obvious expectation of being a role model and providing all players with a positive on-field experience, team coaches are also required to be effective managers. The management aspect of the role will include facets such as communication, organization, accountability and setting high standards.
The role of an NE Surf Team Coach involves two distinct areas – as a Coach and as a Manager.
Coach
- Provide simple, organized, relevant, challenging and enjoyable coaching content for training and games that is based on the New England Surf methodology and game model.
- Use the coaching platforms provided (The Coaching Manual) to create a season plan for the full year and to create appropriate lesson plans for all sessions. This will provide a body of work that can be shared with Directors of Coaching or other coaches within the club who work in the same age range.
- Be a positive role model with players, parents, opposing coaches and officials regardless of game context.
- Provide continuous and relevant feedback to players. This will take the form of ongoing verbal communication through the year but also a formal evaluation schedule that will see an end of season player evaluation being delivered no later than two weeks after the season has ended. There will be one written evaluation each year that must be completed by the team coach.
- Be prepared for training and games. Use TeamSnap to monitor player availability and have all equipment, session plans, rosters, directions and travel time prepared well in advance.
- Ensure that professional standards are maintained in terms of attire, equipment, behavior and facility. Only wear New England Surf coaching apparel at training and games.
- Communicate effectively with your Regional DOC on player, team and operational performance.
- Identify areas of need for the team and recruit players accordingly to increase competitive level/balance of the team.
- Create an annual self-development plan with your Director of Coaching. Be proactive in availing of the coaching support provided by New England Surf to help you be a better coach – licensing support, ongoing education opportunities.
- Attend the mandatory pre-season coach meeting in person. This will be held in August at a date and location to be announced.
- Educate yourself on other coaching opportunities within the club to be able to work additional camps or clinics at a set hourly rate.
Manager
- Understand who is your direct line manager for all assistance and support that may be needed throughout the year.
- Identify/Recruit an Appropriate Parent Coordinator from a parent on the team (use the Regional DOC for assistance here if unsure of the parent dynamics in the group) to assist in managing team operations.
- Use TeamSnap to communicate effectively with your team.
- Check on availability for training and games and alert DOC if any issues at least 48hrs ahead of time.
- Schedule and run team meetings as needed – start and mid-season as a minimum.
- Send out two team emails weekly on a Monday and Thursday or Friday. In season Monday will be a game recap and Thursday/Friday will be a summary of prior week’s training and any game preparation for the weekend.
- Regularly manage/update the TeamSnap Page.
